On Wednesday, at its yearly I/O developer conference in California. Google, the US tech behemoth, revealed its inaugural foldable smartphone named the Pixel Fold. The main objective behind this move is to compete with Samsung Electronics and disrupt its domination in the worldwide market.

Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi, Chinese smartphone makers, have introduced foldable smartphones. Samsung has also launched its own foldable devices. In the United States, Google has become the first major tech company to enter the growing foldable market.

Google has declared that they will launch the Pixel Fold in June across four countries. That are the US, the UK, Germany, and Japan. However, South Korea is not included in the list. Industry sources speculate that this is due to Google’s lack of history in launching smartphones in Korea, and therefore it is less likely that the Pixel Fold will be available there.

On Wednesday, Google showcased its Pixel Fold at a conference, promoting it as the thinnest foldable device available in the market. The device measures 5.8 inches when folded and can expand into a 7.6-inch tablet. They priced the 256-gigabyte model of the device at $1,799 in the United States, which equals the price of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4.

During a press conference held in February at the Mobile World Congress in Spain, Samsung’s Executive Vice President and Head of Mobile Research & Development, Choi Won-Joon stated that Samsung will benefit from the growth of the foldable smartphone market as more people begin to experience these innovative devices. In other words, if the number of people using foldable smartphones increases, Samsung stands to gain from this trend.

Samsung has dominated the foldable smartphone market ever since it launched its inaugural foldable device, the Galaxy Fold, in 2019. The company has further expanded its offerings by introducing the Galaxy Z Flip series. As per the International Data Corporation, a market research firm, Samsung held a remarkable 79 percent share of the foldable market by the end of the previous year.

The global shipment of foldable phones has displayed a steady increase despite the stagnancy of the smartphone market. According to reports from market research firms Counterpoint Research and IDC, the total shipments of foldable devices reached 14.9 million units in the past year, which accounted for 1.2 percent of the overall global smartphone shipments.

Research firms predict that the number of foldable smartphones shipped this year will increase by 52.3% compared to the previous year, reaching a total of 22.7 million units. Furthermore, analysts project that the foldable phone market will witness a compound annual growth rate of 27.6% until 2027, constituting 3.5% of the entire smartphone market.

Some experts predict that if Apple enters the foldable phone market, it could lead to a significant expansion of the market on a global scale. Apple’s reputation for producing innovative and high-quality products, which frequently establish trends in the tech industry, means that their introduction of a foldable phone could appeal to a new group of customers interested in this type of device. This move by Apple may also create a ripple effect throughout the market, inspiring other companies to follow suit. As a result, the overall size and competitiveness of the foldable phone market could increase substantially.

Rumors have been circulating about an Apple foldable device since 2016, but industry experts predict that the company will implement a foldable design in their iPad tablet before incorporating it into their flagship smartphones.

According to an anonymous industry insider, the foldable phone market ecosystem requires Apple’s entry to expand. Google’s initial foldable device release is noteworthy, but it may not have a significant impact on driving the market forward. This comment was made to The Korea Herald on Thursday.

An insider suggests that Google’s decision to not launch its first foldable phone in South Korea. That indicates low anticipation for the foldable phone trend. Samsung may take notice of Google’s entry into the foldable market but won’t see them as a direct competitor.
